Mustafa Altıoklar began his film career in 1989 by directing short films. He gained recognition with his first feature, Balcony (1992), winning the “Best New Director” award at the Ankara Film Festival. Altioklar’s second film, Istanbul Under My Wings (1995), revitalized the struggling Turkish film industry, which had experienced a significant decline in production and viewership. This marked the beginning of Turkish cinema’s resurgence, with Altioklar solidifying his place in the industry with Kolera Street (1997).
Known for his unique use of locations as integral elements in his films, Altioklar further demonstrated his talent in works like The Elevator (1999) and The Bathroom (2005). His ensemble direction in He is in the Army Now (2002) and Turkey’s first psychological thriller, Shattered Soul (2005), which won a “Bronze Gryphon” at the St. Petersburg Film Festival, further cemented his legacy. Altioklar has written the scripts for all his short and feature films.
