Since 2019, Christine Hanke has been a Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence “Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies” at the University of Bayreuth. Since 2014, she has held the Chair of Digital and Audiovisual Media at the same university. Her previous academic positions include professorships in Media Theory at the BTK University of Art & Design, Hamburg, and in Visual Thinking and Perception at the University of Potsdam, as well as in Aesthetics at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne.
In 2005, she completed her PhD in German and Media Studies at the University of Trier with a focus on the history of science and media theory. Her dissertation dealt with the construction of “race” and “gender” in physical anthropology around 1900.
She has been involved in various research projects and teaching positions, including at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, and her work spans media theory, digital media, and the intersections of race, gender, and visual culture.
