Dr. Gizem Aksu, Berlin-based independent choreographer, dancer and academic from Istanbul, graduated from Boğaziçi University Department of Political Science and International Relations and Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts State Conservatory, Department of Contemporary Dance with honor degrees. After completing her M.A and Proficiency in Art programs in the same department, she became Dr. and taught many courses. She is recently teaching in the Theatre Department in Art and Design Faculty at Kadir Has University. With her own works, she has participated in many festivals, biennials and residency programs and received awards in Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Spain, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands, the UK and Turkey.
The artist approaches the body as a collective and relational process and choreography as a constant act of excavation to find and reveal certain relations embedded in physical, societal and historical bodies. Her artistic language has expanded into a broader ground including installation, film and text; she prefers to include this expanded ground in the realm of choreography where her whole body (of knowledge) pulsates.
Her first film, award-winning short documentary dance film 9/8fight41 co-produced by HELLERAU and the Goethe Institut Istanbul, has been screened in 7 countries and available in MUBİ Türkiye. Her last dance creation, ABYSSEA-thru: ALIEN & ALIVE, premiered in August in Berlin with the funding by Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion of the State of Berlin
